Hidden Donegal

Over the past few months, I have been involved with the Community Development Group here in my local village. The group was dormant for a number of years, but reinstated in February 2016 with new members and a renewed focus.

The fundamental purpose of the group is to investigate & support projects & initiatives which will ultimately benefit our local community. These are grouped into three broad areas of local infrastructure, social inclusion and tourism .

The first major milestone for us was engaging local photographer Paul Doherty to develop the drone footage below as a promotional video for the area. We think it’s fantastic, as do almost 30,00 viewers in the 24 hours since it was posted! Don’t take our word for it, see for yourself…!

I consider myself blessed to call this wee corner home. Sure the weather is always like it is in the video; honest…! 😉

The ethos we intend to progress on is “by the community, for the community”. With this in mind, we intend to run annual community ballot to decide upon our focus areas for the 12 months ahead.

One of the overwhelming messages from the 2016 ballot was that the community wanted to see a playground developed in our village, so that’s what we’re currently working on. Although we are at the early stage of outline design, costing and seeking sources of funding, it is exciting to see the many possibles that the site hold! One of my personal favourites is the potential to develop a fairly prominent community garden site! With three national schools in the area, I’m excited at the prospect of being able to use a community garden space as a teaching aid for these leaders of the future.

Further updates as they become available…!

This promotional video for Church Hill and it’s surrounding areas in Donegal was commissioned by Church Hill Social & Community Development Group. Check out our website find us on Facebook & don’t forget to like and share our page!
